Feature in Art & Framing magazine
It was a pleasure to provide some content for The Fine Art Trade Guilds quarterly publication Art & Framing. Most framers in their lifetime won’t have a wasps nest come through their door, but that’s exactly what appeared on my workbench a few months back. So it was a special and unusual task, and one worth sharing with other framers. It was a very delicate thing indeed and so handling it as little as possible was integral to ensure it went into the frame in its best condition possible. I had to do some research to confirm the longevity and also to make sure we kept it sealed for long enough to know that larvae wouldn’t start hatching once it was in the frame!
A box in 3 component parts were constructed using foamcore and mountboard that were wrapped in a deep blue fabric which all slotted together. The nest sat snugly in here so that it didn’t move around in the frame and was naturally supported. A deep box frame was made to house this using two stacked mouldings of oak and ash to mirror the natural tones of the nest. The client was really pleased with the outcome and I was pleased to see it leave the workshop. I could barely breathe whilst handling it it was so fragile!
